The International Propeller Club

The Propeller Club of Portsmouth

Port of Portsmouth, New Hampshire
The Portsmouth organization was chartered on the 5th of June, 1974 with 97 members. Its President was Captain Richard Holt, Harbor Pilot for Portsmouth Pilots, Inc. The Club has more than fulfilled its role designated by the national charter; serving as a source of information and as a forum for discussions on waterborne commerce and marine industry in the Port of New Hampshire area. Issues have included the two hundred mile fishing limit, the propane gas terminal in Newington, and the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. The Club has supported the commercial redevelopment of the former Pease Air Force Base. The Club was an active supported federal funding for the Corp of Engineers expansion of the Piscataqua River Turning Basin that was completed in the spring of 2022.

History

The Portsmouth Propeller Club has been involved in many marine related "special projects" such as: the organization of OP Sail '76 held in June in Boston Harbor, and the Youth Cruise Program in 1981. Programs funded by Youth Cruise enabled young people to participate in sail-training cruises aboard the topsail schooner Providence in 1981 and 1982. In 1983, an Outward Bound School at Hurricane Island in Maine was sponsored. The Club supported, in many ways, the dry berthing of the U.S. Submarine Albacore and the creation of "Albacore Park". Also, several marine environmental and education programs at Odiorne Point State Park and the University of New Hampshire Sea Grant Programs have received the Club's financial support. The Club is a regular contributor to Maine Maritime Academy's scholarship fund.  In 2021 the Club has supported the Wood Island Life Saving Station Restoration and the Piscataqua Maritime Commission's "Sail Portsmouth" program.
